The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) will be getting a new area code, 942, starting April 26, 2025. This decision by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) comes in response to the increasing demand for phone numbers in the region.
The 942-area code will be added to the existing 416, 437, and 647 codes, all of which cover the same geographic area. This overlay system ensures that existing phone numbers will not be affected. The new area code will be rolled out gradually, with new phone numbers being assigned the 942 code as needed.
This is the first new area code for the GTA since 2013 when 437 was introduced. The addition of the 942-area code will ensure that Toronto has enough phone numbers to meet the needs of its growing population and economy.
